There are several causes of back pain during pregnancy. They all increase back strain and result in impaction of nerve roots. One of the main causes of increased back strain during pregnancy is weight gain. During a normal pregnancy, women gain from 25 to 35 pounds. The center of gravity shifts during pregnancy. This can cause changes in posture and pain in the lower back as a result.

Back pain during pregnancy in most cases occurs in the center of the lumbar region of the spine. But in some cases, it may be located lower and on the sides. The location of pain depends on which nerve root is affected.
 
Back pain during pregnancy may be relieved by rest, and is usually made worse by movement. Very often nerve root compression occurs due to prolonged sitting.

Pregnancy is one of the main causes of back pain in women. It occurs when the growing uterus shifts the center of gravity, putting more strain on the back. Back pain during pregnancy is very common. It occurs in 50% to 80% of women in different stages of pregnancy. 
 
The spine is made up of 33 individual bones called vertebrae. The spinal nerves branch off your spinal cord in pairs and travel through small openings between your vertebrae called intervertebral foramina. The vertebra are numbered and divided into four regions.
